The Ramayana brought great comfort to the Hindu devotees, gave them hope and courage especially as they were denied the freedom to worship and to practice their beliefs. The mahabharat war is also the war between vices and virtues. Maharishi Valmiki likened the war between Rama and Rawana as the war between the Veda and the Tantra, the deva and asuric way, the virtues and the vices. These events describe Hanuman, who was said to be a tower of strength with great wisdom and knowledge, but he had to be told what to do. He said if Hanuman is alive, all of us will live, but if he is dead, we are all doomed to death. Also when Jambaavana was hurt, he asked for Hanuman instead of Rama or Lakshmana. This feat created great fear among Rawan’s army, for they thought if Hanuman is so clever and was only a messenger, then Rama must be divinity himself. The story continues where Hanuman turned disaster into an opportunity and burnt Lanka, when his tail was set on fire as punishment from Rawan. On finding Sita, this is how Sita considered Hanuman, “you are Mahatma, you can carry me, but if you do, Rama will be put to shame, as a chaste woman should never be touched or be in the company of another man”. Jambavanna said that Hanuman was the greatest yogi among the ‘vanaras’, most capable and qualified in every respect, strong, wise and educated to fulfill Sugriva’s promise and Rama’s desire.
An alliance between Rama and Sugriva resulted in Hanuman, together with Angada, Nila and Jambavanna, leading an army of Kapi’s in search of Sita who was abducted by Rawan. On Rama’s first sight of Hanuman, he visualized him as a highly cultured person. Both were dressed as hermits, roaming the forest in search of Sita. Valmiki first introduced Hanuman in the Ramayana when Hanuman was sent by Sugriva to investigate the motive of Rama and Lakshmana. He later studied the Vedas and became a great yogi familiar with both Vedic and non Vedic ways. He was a non Aryan and a follower of tantra and was a Shiva worshipper. In the path of devotion, it is written that Hanuman was the son of Kesari who was non-vedic, but his mother Anjani belonged to the deva class and was desirous of her son to follow the Vedic way. He was very instrumental in freeing Sita from the captivity of Rawan.
Hanuman is well remembered as having the distinction of assisting Shri Rama in his conquest over Rawan. The Ramayana, written initially by Valmiki, was later re-engineered around 1574 by Goswami Sant Tulsidas. Hanuman Jayanti is the celebration of the remembrance of Hanumanji, a great warrior, a great mahaveer, a humble server and a well revered character in the Ramayana.
